Norway’s first hydrogen filling station for motor vehicles opened

The most part of the wars all around the world are for raw materials and oil control. We can stop all the wars if we stop to use dirty recources, and for dirty I mean for envìronment and for people.

OSLO, Norway — Norway’s first hydrogen filling station for motor vehicles opened Tuesday as a step in creating a clean-air highway in southern Norway.

Companies, government and organizations participating in a joint effort called HyNor hope to create a “Hydrogen Highway” between the capital, Oslo, and western Norway’s port of Stavanger.

By 2009, HyNor plans to have enough fueling stations along the 580 kilometer (360 mile) route to allow hydrogen cell powered vehicles to routinely make the trip.

The first clean fuel station was opened at a ceremony on the outskirts of Stavanger by Statoil ASA, the Norwegian state-controlled oil company that is branching out into alternative energy.

“Road travel contributes substantially to the emissions of climate damaging gasses,” said Norwegian Environment Minister Helen Bjoernoey at the opening ceremony. “Development of hydrogen vehicles and infrastructure for them are important to ensuring more environmentally friendly transport.”

The only emissions from hydrogen fuel cells are water and heat. However, the vehicles remain expensive, have short range and, in most areas, have few places to refuel.

The Norwegian HyNor plan calls for five refueling stations along the main highway from Oslo to Stavanger, the center of the national petroleum industry that makes Norway the world’s third largest oil exporter, after Saudi Arabia and Russia.

The aim is to extend the network through much of Scandinavia under the Scandinavian Hydrogen Highway Partnership, a joint organization formed by HyNor, Sweden’s HyFuture and Denmark’s Hydrogen Link in June.

Waste management and SEO strategy

We usually talk about waste management but not this time.  SEO strategies are “the talk of the web”. All companies may make up their mind to that.  We did it.
International waste exchange is a very important service for International community, up to 10.000  companies use it every month and we didn’t understand why www.wastexchange.co.uk was no in the top of all search engines search results.
We had noticed that our waste management web site was not listed well by Google. The most part of waste offers and waste requests published on www.wastexchange.co.uk was not listed. We waste d a lot of time understanding why. Finally we tried the “Google sitemap” service and we understood something more. First of all we understood that our waste management site was hidden to crawlers  because we didn’t have a “robots.txt” and a sitemap.xml files. Google Bots that had come into our waste management site found that the robots.txt files was not available. According to this fact they decided to list the wastexchange.co.uk contents later when the robots.txt file would be available. For the same reason they was waiting for our sitemap file. That was for two fatcs:
1- We didn’t have any robots.txt or sitemap.xml files
2- Our server answer “200” that means that a file exist but it’s not reachable.
So Bots said “Well now it’s not reachable, we don’t know where we can go and where we don’t, we’ll back later to list contents of this waste management web site.
We always have thought that robots and sitemap files was not important. We thought  that  Bots  don’t  mind about these informations because these are information that web master provides them. We wrong. Even we had submitted both files Google start to list our content.
We verified it by subscribing to Google sitemap service.
Now we know we have to do a lot of work to improve our SEO but we believe we just did something easy but important. I hope.

Environmental impact assessment: Commission takes legal action to improve implementation in 10 Member States

The European Commission has initiated infringement procedures against 10 Member States over violations of a key EU law on the environmental impact assessment (EIA) of projects. This directive aims to ensure that the environmental effects of a wide range of infrastructural, industrial, mineral extraction and other projects are properly examined before any works are undertaken. The law also gives important participation rights to citizens. The Commission has identified gaps and deficiencies in the ten Member States’ laws and has therefore decided to send first written warnings to ensure that they comply with all the provisions of the Directive.

Enviroment Commissioner Stavros Dimas said: “EU citizens and the European Parliament regularly express concerns about how environmental impact assessment is carried out. Improving the national and regional legislation on this will reduce the potential for grievances to arise and protect Europe’s environment more effectively. ”

The EIA Directive[1] requires Member States to carry out environmental impact assessments of certain public and private projects, before they are authorised, where it is believed that the projects are likely to have a significant impact on the environment. The objective is to identify the environmental impacts and assess whether prevention or mitigation is appropriate. The public must be consulted and its comments taken into account when a decision is taken on whether to authorise the project.

For some projects, such as motorway construction, EIAs are obligatory while for others, for example urban development projects, Member States must operate a screening system to determine which ones require assessment. They can apply thresholds or criteria, carry out case-by-case examination or use a combination of these screening instruments, the aim being to ensure that all environmentally significant projects are assessed.

The Directive was adopted in 1985 and strengthened by a revision in 1997. Member States were required to adopt the necessary national legislation to take account of this amendment by March 1999. A further amendment was adopted in 2003 giving citizens rights to seek judicial redress in relation to public participation.

Having evaluated the national legislation implementing the revised Directive in each Member State, the Commission has identified a number of areas where Member States fail to comply fully. The Commission has therefore sent first warning letters to the following Member States: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands and Poland.

Different grounds for non-compliance were identified in each Member State. Common problems include not requiring certain project categories to undergo EIAs and a failure to make adequate provision for screening projects to see if an EIA is needed. In particular, smaller projects were not adequately addressed.

‘Green’ incineration claims misleading

I think it’s important read and disseminate important indipendent research about incineration effects. I think it’s important talking about it because too many countries want to reply to the waste problem building incinerator. They are destroying our future . We have to say NO!

Here I found something interesting about it:

The independent study, conducted for Friends of the Earth, shows that:

• waste incinerators that generate electricity emit a third more greenhouse gases for the electricity they produce than gas fired power stations [3].

• The situation will get worse in the future, as power generation from gas (and even coal) becomes more efficient, whilst carbon dioxide emissions from incinerators are predicted to increase due to a higher percentage of fossil-fuel containing plastics in the waste they burn.
